Guy of Gisborne Appreciation Page Print

rip

Sir Guy of Gisborne is no more. Villainy personified, anti-hero searching for redemption, misguided, dangerous, selfish, humiliated or wronged...however long you have followed the antics of Sir Guy and however you think of him, he has played a significant part in Richard's career. Love him or hate him, it'll be difficult to forget him. Nor can we forget the hair, the costumes, the strange and bizarre mustard scarf of ick in s1, the heroic fighting skills that improved the moment he left the dark side, the double act with Vasey, the temptation of Marian, the boost in sales of miniature dolls and super-posable horses, the pictures, the fanfic, and finally...the untimely but noble death *sob*. (Damn you Vasey).

He's also the reason that many of Richard's fans, ourselves included, became friends. What do you think of Guy and how will you remember him? Let us know here.

RIP Guy, we'll miss you.

  • wildflower  - Can't believe its over

:P I fell for sexy Guy the first time I saw him on RH and hate it that the show is over. I found the second series on BBCA and quickly ordered the first one, and ordered the third as soon as it became available.

Sorry, I'm a bit of an ignoramous. I have yet to see Robin Hood. But I have remedied this and have ordered the complete box set of DVDs. No doubt I will overdose of RA over Christmas, but what a way to go!

I have just spent this week watching RH Season 3 and I have to admit you really miss the presence of Marian..It's just not the same without her and I don't like Kate much at all. No wonder the show got cancelled.

But it's Kudo's for Lucy Griffith who made the character of Marian so memorable....Still missing Guy *sobs*

  • Cathy Young  - What an amazing character

I just recently got into the BBC Robin Hood, and what got me hooked was, without a question, Sir Guy. A fascinating character beautifully brought to life by Richard Armitage. I would have SO tuned in for a Series 4 with Guy as the new Robin Hood, but alas, it was not to be. Really would have preferred him alive at the end, though the death scene was amazing.

Luckily I still have a lot of episodes to catch up on -- I'm only up to the end of Series 1 on the DVDs, and only saw about half of Series 3. Looking forward to more Sir Guy!

By the way, I totally disagree with those who think the series was unworthy of RA's talent. Sure, the plots were often ridiculous and some of the "message" stuff was heavy-handed at times, but it was good fun AND some very intelligent dialogue and characterization. Not to mention some great acting from other cast members -- Joe Armstrong as Allan, Sam Troughton as Much, Lucy Griffiths as Marian, Keith Allen (of course!) as the Sheriff, and even Jonas Armstrong's too-boyish and cheeky Robin Hood grew on me eventually. Still, Richard (and Guy) was definitely the best.

    Dear Guy.

A month has passed since your untimely demise and still I yearn for:

Your rippling thighs, your underlined eyes.

Your attempts at love, your funny glove.

    Your smile, your sneer,

    Your roars, your leather gear.

But most of all your presence dear.

has the bbc realised yet the folly of their decision please please please reconsider and make season 4 with season 3 being a dream i think it could work after all it was good enough for bobby ewing :

  • Rowena  - Mourning for you my love

Goodbye my lovely dark knight. You are gone but you will always live in my heart and in my dreams.

  • Me  - RIP Guy

With its risible dialogue, painfully aware political correctness, contrived plot devices, dodgy CGI, polystyrene castles, confused looking extras and outlaws that were certainly nothing to write home about (the list of its failings can go and on), Robin Hood - essentially I know just a kids TV programme that owed a lot more than anything to Tony Robinson's 'Maid Marian and Her Merry Men', but alas not as funny - was without doubt right from episode one, the worst version of Robin Hood I have ever seen.....
Yet week after week I tuned in to watch, or to be more exact I tuned in to watch the compelling Sir Guy of Gisborne.
It's ironic that in an earlier interview Richard Armitage compared his character to a robot, when in reality due to his acting abilities and despite a shoddy script, which often relegated him to the background. Gisborne was not only the most interesting but also the most human character in the entire series.

I can't say that I am sorry Robin Hood has ended. I would rather the licence fee be used to fund quality drama instead, and even though I am saddened to be unable to see Guy anymore, I have always known that the actor who so wonderfully played him was wasted in this show.

In short, Robin Hood may not have been all that I had hoped for but because of it I now know who the actor Richard Armitage is, and for that alone I am really grateful.

richard has allways being very indepth and expressive in his interviews about characters to a degree which made me wonder was acting his first love or producing and directing .
i see from his latest interview he would like to enter the world behind the camera , so if this be the road our hero will take good luck to him but do not forsake our screens for ever

  • Judith  - Beautiful Memories

Having watched Robin Hood since it started, my only reason for continuing was Guy of Gisborne. Thanks to Richard's masterful portrayal (given some mediocre scripts to work with), this man was elevated beyond just being a brutal sidekick to the sherrif to a fully rounded, very complex human being, full of conflicting emotions and a vulnerability which made him so appealing. Whenever Guy was on screen, even if he wasn't speaking, he remained a charismatic presence and stole every scene he was in. He was a great character, and the one who went on the greatest emotional journey throughout the whole series. His end was fitting and moving, and beautifully played by Richard.

Richard - Thank you for giving us such a wonderful character. You made us care for him. May you continue to enjoy the success you deserve with future projects.

  • mrs maureen o hara

reality has set in he is no more alas poor guy you were but a fleeting moment in our poor withered hearts how do we go forth into ordinary life after your rise from the darkside into heavens shining light oh woe are we :( :( :( :(

  • Shezan  - He stole my horse!

Golly he was pretty. And HOT. And, well, you know, adorably, hopelessly inept. It's the glory of Richard Armitage that he managed to take Yr Generique Evil Minion #7589, with the abilities and the dumb lack of luck of Wile E. Coyote (Anvils! Delivered by the Acme Corp.! ON YOUR RIGHT TOE!!!), and turned him into this complex, three-dimensional and often moving character. To give the writers credit, they gave him quite a bit more to work with in season 2. He got frustrated, and he got game. And he got chemistry with Marian - but that was nothing, next to the chemistry he turned out to find with ROBIN of all people, in my absolute favourite ep from all three seasons, The Enemy of My Enemy. HOW did the ghosts of Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond manage to get this writing gig? See, I would have watched an entire SEASON of the Odd Couple starring Guy & Robin. SEVERAL seasons. They had deadpan delivery! They had comic timing! They fed each other's reaction shots! Guy going "He stole my horse!" in the voice of Walter Matthau delivering the last line of The Front Page: "Son of a bitch stole my watch!" Forget the leather-clad angst; I wanted these two doing Ye Medievalle Road Movie, like, NOW.

Perhaps they're doing it up there; and Marian is laughing.

  • Pearl Ibarra  - Spot On!

You expressed what I always thought...Guy was pretty much inept and I daresay incompetent...not sexy at all in that regard.

  • Pennie

Richard Armitage is such a talented actor, he portrayed Guy's death beautifully.
3 brilliant years and now he's gone.
He live on forever in my heart and many others.

    RIP Guy

  • Steenabo  - RIP Guy

The character's end came to a thankfully natural conclusion. I am glad Richard Armitage has masterfully fufilled his professional obligations to the show and is now given the time and space needed to pursue other opportunities worthy of his talent and dedication!

  • mollie  - ...

    Oh My God!
    Guy!
    I cannot believe it!
3 fabulous years and now he has to go like that!
If they ever do a fourth seris without him, it should be against the law!
It's not right without the guy!

    Molliexxx
    P.S I love you Guy!
