New interview on Naxos website 2 March 2010

Richard has been interviewed by Naxos Audiobooks regarding his recording of Venetia by Georgette Heyer. The 11 minute audio clip consists of an interview followed by an excerpt from the audio book.

You can listen and download the mp3 audio interview on the Naxos Venetia page.

The interview reveals many interesting things including… (perhaps you would like to listen first before I reveal too much):

  • How long he has been working on audio books
  • Listening to radio plays as a child
  • Challenge of creating a world, characters, where the voices might come from
  • What he thinks of Georgette Heyer and her writing, the comedy in the writing
  • What he reads, how his reading is affected by his job and the authors he prefers to read
  • Strike Back – there is the possibility for another series
  • He still hopes to create the Richard III drama, and it’s picking up interest now.

Brilliant news I’m sure you’ll agree.

Ali…I tried Firefox and was finally able to hear the interview; thank you! Also, thank you for all the hard work you put into this site…it’s greatly appreciated!

Reply from Ali: oh that’s brilliant, glad to hear it. Thanks MaryJane.

On the “me-and-richard” site, they were comparing pics of RA with Richard III. Amazingly similar! hopefully, the project takes flight! As for the radio clips, my phone doesn’t play it *sobs* I guess I’ll have to wait until I can access an actual computer! Some nights I’ll play Richard’s CBeebies stories to help me fall asleep. Sweet dreams… ;-)

When I click on the link to listen to this interview, I get the message that my browser can’t display this web page. Is it because I’m in the U.S., do you think?

Reply from Ali: No, your location shouldn’t be a problem as others from the US have managed to listen to it. Try another browser – if you use Internet Explorer, try Firefox. It’s free to download and many people prefer it to IE.

It is the audio sample of Venetia page I have trouble with. The other ones are fine. Maybe there is a different system or a block to The Netherlands. I don’t know.

Just listened to the clip and the speed is not right. Sounds like Richard on speed! Funny though!

Reply from Ali: it’s working fine for me, do you have the same issue with the ‘audio sample’ on the Venetia page of Naxos’s site? Maybe mp3′s aren’t playing correctly on your PC/Mac?

What a Treat! Listening to this interview gives an amazing insight into how Richard approaches this aspect of his work. His voice has a lovely soothing quality which is ideal for reading audio books. Listening to his views on the books which he reads, and his personal preferences reminds me of the lovely interview which he gave on the Vulpes Libris site. Also, I was very pleased to hear that the Richard III project is attracting interest. I hope that this means that he will realise his dream a little sooner, since he had said that he thought that it may be beyond his scope to play the role himself. However, he also said that if that should be the case, he wouldn’t rule out playing another role. I sincerely hope that it will happen before he goes into directing or producing. It would be a shame if he couldn’t appear in something which he has said he would love to achieve.

Am I hallucinating? I’ve just gone on the Naxos website and I can’t find the interview anywhere… It knew I was coming and ran away obviously. Or have I just pressed the wrong button?

Reply from admin: I contacted Naxos and they apologised for the interview being unavailable for a short time today, but it’s back now.

It seems that long since I last heard his voice I had almost forgotten what a wonderfully sexy voice he has (as if!). His voice and temperament are well suited to audio books. Can’t wait to hear the radio dramatisation Clarissa. I don’t usually listen to radio plays (or the radio at all really) so it will be a very new experience for me (a very pleasant one!).

One thing before I finish. At the end of the interview on Venetia he mentioned his intention (hopefully) to realise his dream of producing Richard III and said he had a very personal relationship with the author. I assume this was his mischevious sense of humour (such a tease) and meant the author was infact himself. Although didn’t someone say he did the research and the script was written by someone else? By the way the actual site where the battle of Bosworth took place was found in Leicester. It was about two miles where it was believed to have been! I wonder if Richard (given the chance) will go for authenticity and film in his hometown of Leicestershire? Now wouldn’t that be nice!

I had to work late and I was knackered!
Then I found Richard’s interview and listened to it.
There’s no better way to relax than his velvety voice …
